PhotobucketTom Glavine got the loss yesterday as the Atlanta Braves fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Glavine also allowed 2 home runs in the game including a grand slam. The homers is not that uncommon, Glavine has allowed 352 in his career and has allowed the 4th most by an active player. He is 22nd all-time on that list for all players.

What is surprising that it was only the 2nd grand slam he has allowed in his career. Eric Byrnes was the lucky guy this time around and Jose Vidro got the other when the southpaw pitched for the New York Mets.

For fans going to the Mets games on September 19th, 20th and 21st at Turner Field you better get there early.  The Braves starting pitchers have done a great job when playing the Mets in Atlanta this season.  What makes it more impressive is that everyone is pitching in. (sorry about the pun)

The starting pitchers are a combined 5-0 with a 1.50 era.

April 5th - Tim Hudson: 6 ip, 3 er - win

April 6th - John Smoltz: 5 ip, 0 er - win

May 20th (game 1) - Tom Glavine: 6 ip, 1 er - win

May 20th (game 2) - Jorge Campillo: 6 ip, 0 er - win

May 21st - Jair Jurrjens: 7 ip, 1 er - win

On the other side, the Braves starting pitchers at Shea Stadium this year are just 1-2 with a 7.62 era.

Tom Glavine won game #305 of his career in game one vs the Mets yesterday.  The southpaw has won 244 as a Brave and won 61 when he played for that other team from 2003 to 2007.

Glavine had no problem against the Mets, but as you remember he struggled big-time the first time he played the Bravos as this graphic suggests…

5/24/03 vs ATL                                 5/20/08 vs NYM

              innings                   3 1/3                                                       6

              er allowed                6                                                            1

Tim Hudson is tonight’s scheduled starter against the Padres tonight. The right-hander has been pitching in the majors since 1999. Since then he is among the elite pitchers in baseball. He is currently 3rd in the majors in games won in that time period. Here are the top 7 and you will notice a few other names that you recognize

  1. Greg Maddux - 147
  2. Randy Johnson - 143
  3. Tim Hudson - 139
  4. Andy Pettitte - 137
  5. Mike Mussina - 136
  6. Curt Schilling - 132
  7. Tom Glavine - 130

Tom Glavine is on the disabled list for the first time in his career. Team doctors are saying his strained hamstring needs more time to heal. The DL time went on retro-active to April 14th. Chuck James was called up in Glavine’s place.

The 22-year veteran was 0-1 with a 2.38 ERA this season.

When Tom Glavine walked off the field on Sunday afternoon after only 16 pitches, Braves fans the world over had the same reaction…”are you kidding?” The much heralded depth of the 2008 Braves starting rotation is being tested early this season after Mike Hampton was put on the DL before his first start, and may be tested further with the uncertainty surrounding Tom Glavine’s hamstring.

So let’s play hypothetical for a bit…who fills in if these two are out for a prolonged amount of time? The contenders? Jeff Bennett, Chuck James, Jo-Jo Reyes, Buddy Carlyle, Jorge Campillo. James has proven that he doesn’t belong on a major league roster. Bennett is a “Bobby Cox guy,” but his prolonged lack of command after coming in for the injured Glavine is concerning. However, coming in cold like that when you aren’t expecting to pitch is a tough situation, so he should receive a pass on that. He’s in.

Who else? My vote goes for Campillo. He looked awesome in the two innings he pitched on Sunday, not giving up a walk or a hit while striking out three. Plus, I think for the sake of the organization, James, Reyes and Carlyle need to be getting consistent work in Richmond. The Braves have shown that these three are, in the very least, in the Braves immediate plans. They need consistent innings in AAA to continue their development. Campillo looked good, he’s already up, so there is no need to disrupt the AAA rotation with a roster move when Campillo will probably provide a similar start to what any of the AAA guys would. Again, just a hypothetical.

Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine threw only 16 pitches yesterday and failed to retire a batter. He left with hamstring injury and might go on the disabled list.

That was only his 3rd career start that he failed to go at least one full inning. Here are the other two…

May 16, 1989 vs the Cubs: (his major league debut)

0 IP, 4 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs (7 total pitches)

September 30, 2007 vs the Marlins: (Mets fans remember this one)

1/3 IP, 5 hits, 7 earned runs, 2 BB, 1 HBP (36 total pitches)

and yesterday vs Nationals: o IP, 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 BB (16 total pitches)

Tom Glavine was the tough luck loser yesterday (ok, no decision, but he should have won.) In 2 starts this season, the southpaw has a 0.79 era but zero wins. Starting off strong is nothing new to him. Here are his ERA’s in the month of April the last few years…

  • 2008: 0.79
  • 2007: 2.80
  • 2006: 2.29
  • 2005: 5.67 (what happened?)
  • 2004: 1.64
  • 2003: 2.59
  • 2002: 0.89

In fact his career record in 102 games in April is 51-26 with a 2.68 era.

Jair Jurrjens pitched well in his Braves debut last night. The rookie right-hander threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing just 2 runs en route to a win.

Who knows how he will finish his rookie campaign? Here is how two current Braves did their first year.

  • John Smoltz: 1988 (2-7 5.48 era)
  • Tom Glavine: 1988 (7-17 4.56 era)
