Save a Fortune and Protect Your Sporting Promotion with Promotional Insurance

Brands often go straight to market with new and creative sports based promotions without fully considering the massive over redemptions that can occur in the event of a successful campaign. Sports based promotions have enormous rates of customer participation as brands and agencies know only too well that “sport” plus “product” equals “sales”. What is unknown is the expense of fulfilling the reward or prize in the event of an over redeeming promotion.

Promotional risk management companies are very effective at helping brands and agencies manage fully the entire project life cycle of a sports based promotion. Examining sporting events highlights just how unpredictable they can be. For example, national teams may not perform as predicted due to injury or some other form of athlete unavailability so in terms of the promotion it will have underperformed but the brand may have bought the wrong promotional insurance at the wrong time and thus vastly over spent.

Using a two phase approach to sports based promotions helps promotional risk management companies properly assess the risk involved. The redemption risk forms the first phase of this analysis. Redemption risk is the number of customers who are likely to take part in the promotion. The Specific Risk is the second phase and this refers to the outcome of the sporting event. Examples of specific risk include the number of medals won or perhaps the number of goals scored. Utilising data gathered from historically similar promotions enables management companies to advise on the right kind of promotional insurance to buy.

The premiums that constitute promotional insurance are normally calculated up-to-the minute. Where the premiums vary greatly has a lot to do with the performance of a specific team or that of their opponents. For example, the predicted performance of a national team may form the basis of a sporting promotion in which the following would be analysed:

1.    The national team is playing well in all events leading up to the major sporting tournament on which the promotion is based, thus the team is said to be in form.
2.    The national teams predicted haul of medals or wins during the sporting event.

Promotional insurance typically becomes more expensive the closer the start of the sporting event approaches. This is primarily due to the large pots of money insurance companies put aside to cover such sporting promotions.  Premiums rise as brands buy more insurance from the same companies so there is less of the starting pot to go round. It is not unusual for insurance premiums to double in price a week or so before the sporting event is due start.

In order that the agencies and the brands they represent can save as much money as possible it is important they involve a promotional risk management company as soon as possible. Utilising the experience of these companies and buying the right promotional insurance at the right price will ensure a well-run promotion potentially saving the brand a fortune.
