I got a call from fellow sportspageatlanta writer Bart Stevens this morning and he told me that today was the Atlanta Falcons birthday.  I am sorry, I forgot a card and a gift… my bad.  Anyway he is away today, so I decided to put the stat of the day theme, falcons style.

Overall record: 256-378-6… that’s a winning pct of .404.  Of the current teams, only the Buccaneers (.393) and the Texans (.333) are worse.  They have made the playoffs 8 times… that is more than a few teams, yes most of them joined the league in the 1990’s or 2000’s, but it is more than the Cardinals who joined the league in 1920 while playing their home games in Chicago.

They have won 3 division titles (1980 and 1998 NFC West and a 2004 NFC South) and 1 conference title (1998).

They are still looking for that first Super Bowl and that first back-to-back winning seasons.  It may be awhile.

Mark Teixeira hit another home run yesterday against the Blue Jays, but it wasn’t enough as Atlanta fell to Toronto 9-5.  Teixeira has been a good hitter vs the Blue Jays.  He is a career .315 hitter against them and has clobbered 17 home runs.  The 17 is 2nd most against any team he has faced.

Here are the top teams that he has hit home runs against…

20 vs Oakland Athletics

17 vs Toronto Blue Jays

16 vs Seattle Mariners

16 vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

He has hit 2 career home runs against the Braves.  One was against Russ Ortiz in 2003 and the other against Jorge Sosa in 2005.

UGA VILast night in his Savannah home with the Seiler family by his side, Uga VI, the University of Georgia mascot suffered a heart attack.  He was just under 10 in human years and has been the mascot since the middle of the 1999 season.

He had been on the sideline for more wins than any previous Uga’s and was part of 7 bowl winning teams.

He will be buried in Sanford Stadium with the rest of the Uga’s on Monday.

Here are some more photos taken of Uga VI taken by probably the greatest photographer of Georgia Bulldog sports, Radi Nabulsi and the rest of the ugasports.com staff.

The Atlanta Braves looked good yesterday as they shut out the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0.  Bobby Cox used to manage the Blue Jays in the middle of his 2 stints with the Braves.  He managed 4 seasons from 1982 to 1985 and finished with a 355-292 record.  He was also the American League manager of the year winner in 1985.

Here is how he finished in each year…

1982: 78-84 (7th out of 7 AL East teams)

1983: 89-73 (4th in AL East)

1984: 89-73 (2nd in AL East)

1985: 99-62 (1st in AL East… lost to Kansas City Royals in AL Championship Series 4 games to 3)

A few days after Georgia guard Billy Humphrey was arrested for the 3rd time, coach Dennis Felton dismissed him from the basketball team.

Felton said, “I am disappointed in Billy, we’ve worked really hard with him in the past to see that succeeds, but I feel that it’s now best for our program to move forward without him.”

Humphrey would have been a senior next season.  He started 28 games last season and was 2nd on the team averaging over 12 points per game.

It seems like the only time we are seeing Chipper Jones is in a pinch-hitting situation when the game can be tied or won.  It is very sad not being able to see him do the things that we are accustomed to.  Except for Wednesday, he is looking pretty good as a pinch-hitter this season.  He is 2-for-3 with a walk and an rbi in the pinch-hitting role this season.

Chipper wasn’t always that way.  This is Chipper’s pinch-hitting stats prior to this season…

hits/at bats - 4/36

average - .111

home runs - 1

rbi - 6

walks - 6

strikeouts 13

His only pinch hit home run came on July 2, 2006 against Baltimore Orioles pitcher Sendy Rleal.  All I know about Sendy is that 2006 has been his only season that he has pitched in so far and his birthday was last Saturday.

Yes, we’re in the NFL’s dead period, between the draft and training camp, but the Falcons still made some moves over the past month that do not include Matt Ryan’s new contract.  Here’s what you might have missed, buried in the back of your sports section:

5/21:  Signed TE Brad Lastorti – Lastorti gives the Falcons 6 tight ends, which means the odds of him making it out of camp aren’t great, but he will be given a chance to fight for a backup spot anyway.

5/22: Waived P Jimmie Kaylor – The undrafted free agent was an unlikely contributor anyway, what with Michael Koenen already on the roster.

5/23: Waived SS D.J. Wolfe – Another undrafted free agent that apparently didn’t have a place with this team.

6/7: Signed TE Keith Zinger to a 4 year contract – Zinger, a blocking TE taken in the 7th round, could fit well with the running game, and might already be the best blocker the team has at the position.  Still, he’s probably the 3rd stringer behind Ben Hartsock and Martrez Milner at this point.

6/10: Waived TE George Cooper – With the Zinger signing, the Falcons had 6 tight ends under contract, and that was an unnecessarily high number.  Cooper got the ax as a result.

6/10: Signed CB Chevis Jackson and S Thomas DeCoud – The two defensive backs taken in the 3rd round figure to factor quickly into Brian VanGorder’s defense.  Jackson could see time in Nickel packages and might challenge Chris Houston for his starting spot.  DeCoud can play either safety position and might be the primary backup at both.

6/17: Signed CB Wilroy Fontenot – The 7th round pick is looking at 3rd string duty, or might wind up on the practice squad.

6/17: Released FS Jimmy Williams – The team’s top pick from the 2006 draft had a short but disappointing tenure in Atlanta.  Williams never took to any position, and had let his weight balloon in recent weeks to more than 230 pounds.  More of an issue than the weight was his poor play at free safety, which had dropped him all the way to 4th string.  He was unlikely to play much this season, so this move is really nothing more than a reminder of how poorly the team drafted during the Jim Mora era.

6/18: Signed RB Thomas Brown – The local hero from UGA could knock Jason Snelling off the roster, as Brown is an ideal 3rd down back, a hard worker in the weight room, and a natural leader on and off the field.  He’ll also challenge for kick return duties.

6/20: Signed S Deke Cooper and WR Harry Douglas – Cooper, a local guy, could make the team as a 3rd string safety.  Douglas, a 3rd round pick this year, made a big splash at mini-camp and could play in the slot earlier than expected.

6/20: Released OT Michael Butterworth, DE Derrick Jones, S Jamal Lewis, and OL Kurt Quarterman – Butterworth and Quarterman were unlikely to factor along the line this year.  The same goes for Derrick Jones at defensive end, one of the deeper positions on the roster.  Jamal Lewis might have played a role on special teams, but he is considered too raw for safety play, and that’s probably what cost him a spot.

6/23: Released C Doug Datish -  Datish was 4th string and wasn’t going to factor into the guard rotation, so the cut was a logical one given roster limitations.

The Georgia baseball team lost to Fresno State 6-1 and the other Bulldogs became champion of the college baseball world (can’t wait to read it on sportspage fresno.com).

Unlike Tuesday, pitching wasn’t the problem.  Nathan Moreau and Dean Weaver did not make too many mistakes, but the ones they did proved costly.

On the other side, Georgia could not figure out Fresno State’s Justin Wilson.  The lefty only allowed one single run which was courtesy of a solo blast by Gordon Beckham.  Georgia failed on opportunity after opportunity with runners on base and for the most part, the lefty batters looked totally lost.

Beckham along with Ryan Peisel were named to the All-Tournament team.  Beckham batted .522 with 2 home runs, while Peisel batted .407 with 2 home runs as well during the College World Series.

Fresno State’s Tommy Mendonca was named the College World Series’ Most Outstanding Player.

The Georgia Bulldogs fell short last night in the College World Series.  The Dawgs were aiming for their 2nd title in team’s history.  They were the first SEC team to win it all back in 1990.  Since then, the LSU Tigers became champs in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 2000.

Georgia is not the only SEC team to finish runner-up in baseball’s title game, he is that list…

2008: Georgia loses to Fresno State

2005: Florida loses to Texas

2002: South Carolina loses to Texas

1997: Alabama loses to LSU (only time 2 SEC teams have met in final)

1983: Alabama loses to Texas

1951: Tennessee loses to Oklahoma

South Carolina and Arkansas played in the finals as well before they became members of the SEC…

1979: Arkansas loses to Cal State Fullerton

1977: South Carolina loses to Arizona State

1975: South Carolina loses to Texas

Georgia Bulldog shooting guard Billy Humphrey was arrested early Tuesday morning for drunk driving.  He was admitted to a Gwinnett County jail after officers arrested him for a DUI, failure to maintain a lane and purchasing alcohol while underage.  Humphrey blew a .02 which is more than the under 21 limit.  He turns 21 in October.

Head Coach Dennis Felton has yet to decide on future matters involving Humphrey.

This is Humphrey’s 2nd alcohol related arrest and university policy would have him suspended for at least half of the team’s regular season games if found guilty.
