Paul Johnson at Practice

To end Tuesday’s practice, Georgia Tech’s second practice in full pads, coaches started the first team offense on their own two yard line and told everyone to go live. The defense still seems ahead of the offense, but the offense is showing signs of life.

The ball was placed at about an inch from the goal line. Then, the No. 1 offense moved to a first down against the No. 1 defense. In fact, the No. 1 offense was relatively efficient, but the No. 2 and 3 offenses were greatly troubled.

“It’s a lot easier to play third-team defense than it is to play third-team offense,” coach Paul Johnson said. “Sometimes, you can’t judge. In that drill, the second and third defense kicked the second and third offense, but the first team offense made a first down every time.”

In sum, the defense looked more alive than the offense, which was dropped for a safety at least three times. On the first play, as the offense began each series backed up against its 2-yard line, quarterback Josh Nesbitt was smashed and dropped by end Derrick Morgan.

B-back Jonathan Dwyer ran for a first down as A-back Marcus Wright cut down blitzing cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels on the backside.

Also, reserve B-back Anthony Allen, the Louisville transfer who must sit out this season, had an impressive first-down run. Freshman A-back Embry Peeples got outside for a rare 10-yard gain for one of the backup offenses.

Generally, though, reserve defenders had their way.

The Georgia Tech men’s basketball team got a piece of good news from the NCAA yesterday as new graduate student, and former St. Francis University basketball player, Bassirou Dieng was given permission to play in the upcoming 2008-09 basketball season.

NCAA rules require student-athletes sit out one year when transferring, but the NCAA can grant a waiver when the student-athlete enrolls at an institution in a graduate program which is not offered by his previous school. Dieng, who received his undergraduate degree from St. Francis in the spring in Political Science and International Studies and will begin his graduate studies at Tech in the fall semester.

Dieng (pronounced BASS-uh-roo dee-ENG), who is 6-9 and 215 pounds, has one year of eligibility at Tech. In two years at St. Francis, he averaged 8.5 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game and shot 46.2 percent from the floor. Dieng also played one year at Norfolk State (2004-05) before moving to St. Francis, where he sat out the 2005-06 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules.

Georgia Tech started the Paul Johnson era on Wednesday as they began football practice.  As you all know by now, Johnson was previously the Navy head coach (yes I know he was at Georgia Southern, too… but most recently he was at Navy).

Anyway all the talk is that he is going to change the offense dramatically.  Well, this is how the Yellow Jacket offense has been split up the last 2 seasons compared to how the Midshipmen divided their offense.

Georgia Tech

2007: 548 running plays (60.2%) 363 passing plays (39.8%)

2006: 526 running plays (58.8%) 369 passing plays (41.2%)

Navy

2007: 804 running plays (85.5%) 136 passing plays (14.5%)

2006: 764 running plays (87.2%) 112 passing plays (12.8%)

DickeyGeorgia Tech center Ra’Sean Dickey has decided to transfer and play basketball professionally in the Ukraine.

The 5th year center did not play last season.  In 3 seasons, he averaged 8.7 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game.  More importantly he made over 60 percent of his shots during his Yellow Jacket career.  His best season was his sophomore season where he averaged 13.2 points per game.

He will play in the Ukraine with his former Tech teammate Anthony Morrow.
