Rick Sund isn’t resting on the of signing Joe Johnson — he apparently has another former All-Star in mind.
The Atlanta Hawks have offered a contract to 15 time All-Star and four time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal. The deal would be worth a little under $6 million a year for two years.
O’Neal has been one of the best players in league history, yet is coming off his worst performance in his illustrious 18-year career. Shaq looked tired and bored during games last year and also had an early exit in the playoffs. The Hawks are hoping O’Neal can still give 20-25 productive minutes and be a rebounding and defensive presence in the paint.
Atlanta has also shown interest in Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who averaged 7.4 points per game in Cleveland last year and Brad Miller, who scored 8.8 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game in Chicago.
The team is attempting to address a long time need for a big man. Whichever center the Hawks sign will move Al Horford to his natural position of power forward giving the Hawks more options in Larry Drew‘s new offense.

Nubyjas Wilborn brings a unique perspective and a wealth of experience covering the Atlanta sports scene. The Lithonia, GA native grew up literally with a sports page in his crib. He was reading local legendary scribe Furman Bisher while the other children were reading nursery rhymes. Nubyjas tried his hand at playing on the field and thought he would even play in the World Cup until he got embarrassed in a training session by Clint Mathis during his freshman year of college. He then realized it was easier and there was more longevity in talking about sports rather than playing. You can hear Nubyjas on WCLK 91.9 as the voice of Clark Atlanta Football and Basketball, see him in press boxes all over the city and doing updates on radio for Sporting News Radio.
