John Smoltz struck out 10 Florida Marlins yesterday in an 8-0 Atlanta Brave win.  He now has 2,996 in his career… 4 shy of the magical number of 3,000.

There is only one player ever to have 5,000 strikeouts in his career (Nolan Ryan)

Only 4 players with 4,000 (Ryan, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton)

Only 15 players with 3,000 (I am not going to name them, trust me)

As of right now only 61 players with 2,000

And only 418 players with 1,000

Just missing with 999 is Joey Jay, a pitcher that played for 13 seasons including part of one with the Atlanta Braves in 1966.  He is also known as the first little league player to advance to the major leagues.

Not only did he miss a milestone with 1,000 career strikeouts, he missed a milestone by ending his career with 99 wins.
