Atlanta Braves ace, John Smoltz is sitting on 2,981 career strikeouts after fanning 6 Mets hitters yesterday. He has only 19 strikeouts to go until he reaches the elusive 3,000 career strikeout club, which only has 15 members in the history of baseball.

Smoltz probably isn’t going to join the club on his next start, but you need to start planning on watching this historic occurrence some time in the 2nd or 3rd week in April. The Braves begin an seven game home stand on April 18th and will host the Dodgers, Nationals and Marlins. If Smoltz gets his third start at some point during that home stand (April 18th - April 24th) the home crowd at “The Ted” could be in for a magical moment.

My money is on Sunday, April 20th against the Dodgers. Anyone else have a guess at when Smoltz K’s his 3,000th victim?
